By PPL on November 20, 2025
Are you considering self-direction for yourself or a loved one, but not sure where to start? PPL can cut through the confusion so you can make an informed choice.
Here are answers to some of the questions you may have about self-direction.
What is self-direction?
Self-direction is a home care option for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, chronic illness, and older adults. It allows people to have full control over their healthcare planning and decisions. Participants in a self-direction program choose who provides their support, as well as where and when they receive it.
Self-direction lets participants remain in their homes and communities, supported by caregivers they know and trust — often family members or friends who are already helping.
How do I know if self-directed care is right for me or my loved one?
Self-direction is a great option for people looking for alternatives to traditional home health agencies or long-term care facilities. PPL’s quiz can provide more insight into whether self-direction is right for you.
